Recently I had the thought of re-balancing my portfolio for 2010. So I took all my holding and and broke them up into sectors. I tried to identify 5 sectors that I thought would either be a safe area ( low beta bond funds) or growth oriented. My final analysis resulted in very little change but that may not be the case with everyone. Each person needs to evaluate their own level of risk to determine how best to deploy their money. In my case, I made the following allocations. First, I allocated about 25% of my portfolio to the Gold / Natural resources sectors ( broad definition). I spread the investments over large miners and small gold miners and some natural resource funds. I like this better than the 'GLD' because they tends to provide greater returns. My next sector was the energy area. This sector can be a little volatile so I placed about 1/2 of the exposure in gas pipelines which have a low beta and a great dividend and the other half in gas / oil exploration companies and ETF's. This sectors weighs in at about 20%. The next area is what I consider 'Dow Definite's' This isn't exactly a sector but it tends to act as a bond fund without being a bond fund. I use stocks like AT&T, Verizon,GE etc. These are pretty dependable and offer a reasonable dividend. They account for about 5 %. A slightly larger sector that I chose is the Financial. Over the past several months I've increased this area and its appears to be paying off. Besides the standard large banks, I've spread the risk with the "XLF' and a small amount in public "hedge funds". This way if the market takes off in M&A or some other area, I have some exposure to give me the ability to switch my money around. Finally, about 15% is comprised of bond funds. These are both US and International for relative safety and TIP's to give me a heads up in case inflation rears it head which I fully anticipate. But, the question is when will it occur. The balance of my investments ( about 10%) are scattered between some "hunches" and "BRIC" country ETF's. So far, so good and at this time I can't identify another sector that may perform better. The saying is " the trend is your friend" and I like a friendly market. Good luck in your evaluations and your final allocations !
